The Hearnes Home Tour Part One: Bedrooms, Bathrooms & Office

We bought this house in Moab, Utah in early 2019 (side note, if you’re looking for a relator in Moab, we highly reccomend Lynda Diem! She’s amazing! You can tell her we sent you 😊). Actually this is a good story…we put our offer in at the end of 2018, left town for over a month, the offer was accepted the day we left for a two week trip through the Alps, meaning our “due diligence” period was spend on vacation, trying to find random WiFi to check in with inspectors and such! Then we flew home to Texas, spent a few days packing a Uhaul with little bits of furniture we’d either kept from Pre-Roadlife, or we absconded with from parents’ houses (thank you parents!!), and drove to Moab to move into our house! It was truly a wild and wonderful surprise, but we are SO thankful for this home.

It’s been a little over a year, and I’ve really loved the process of decorating and making this house our home. Everytime I post photos from our house on my Instagram Stories, people ask me to do a tour! So! Here it is, part one, the bedrooms + office in our house. Our style is very focused on comfort without sacrificing aesthetic. I love mixing patterns and having a lot of beautiful textiles. I would describe my decor style as Jackson Hole cabin meets Santa Fe adobe :) With a heavy influence from our beloved Pendleton collection!

I tried to link as many things as possible! I’ll hopefully get Part Two (living room, kitchen, backyard) out this week. We’ll see!

Pendleton Inspired Master Bedroom

After three years on the road, living in a tiny camper with a full sized bed and nothing else (literally, it was just the bed with a shell over it and storage under), then a van with 20sq feet of floor space, and the our camper with more space, but still small…getting our own master bedroom was seriously one of the highlights of getting a house! We spent a lot of nights squished in the full size bed saying “one day, when we have a house, we’re getting a king.” Plenty of room to stretch out!!

I absolutely love our bedroom. It’s clearly very Pendleton-inspired! I’ve had an obsession with Pendleton blankets for a long time. I remember before our wedding, my Aunt and Uncle wanted to get us something “heirloom” that we’d have forever. We were young, and we knew we wanted to spend a lot of our lives traveling, so at first we couldn’t think of any “thing” we’d have forever…and then I remembered Pendleton Blankets!! We picked out the Silver Bark blanket and they had our monogram embroidered in the corner, and that blanket has traveled with us everywhere since. It was our first Pendleton blanket, and it’s still one of my favorites. The first Pendleton I ever bought myself was the Yosemite one hanging above our bed — it was a limited edition (they only made 750 total!) and I remember Fall 2017, walking past it in the village store a few days in a row and really admiring it. One week, we photographed 4 elopements and one session in 5 days, and on the 5th day, I decided I was going to treat myself to the blanket! It was a huge purchase for us at the time, but was so worth it (and well earned!), I know I’ll treasure it forever.

Since then, we’ve visited their factory in Oregon and developed a relationship with the company, doing photography projects for them and collaborating. When we bought our house, Pendleton was kind enough to outfit us with a few of our favorite blankets and towels as gifts, and I am so thankful!! I’ve always said my dream “sponsorship” would be Pendleton. So, needless to say, a LOT of my home decor inspiration is based around my beloved Pendleton collection!

The wall color, Benjamin Moore Essex Green, is one of my favorite impulse decisions I’ve made! I had picked it out for the accent wall in our living room (which I’ll share in part two!) and after seeing it up on the wall, I decided I had to have it somewhere else in the house. It felt pretty risky to do such a dark color in our bedroom, and a few of my friends advised against it, but I LOVE it. Thankfully we have a giant window that lets in quite a bit of light, so I truly never feel like the room is too dark. The green looks so good with the Pendleton blankets, and it helps distract from the carpet (I don’t love the carpet in these rooms, but we don’t hate it enough to take it out). I will note, I chose to do a matte finish on both the accent wall and the bedroom walls, and I would absolutely do some level of gloss if I could do it over again. The matte is BEAUTIFUL, but it shows every single mark. Even if I accidentally brush my hand on the wall, it shows up and is really difficult to remove. We’ll probably paint over it all with the same color but low gloss in a few years.

Charlie’s chair is a really sweet story. It used to be a blue chair at my parents’ house, and it was my childhood dog Tally’s favorite. I have so many memories of Tally in that blue chair! A few years ago, my mom got tired of the color, so she painted it with fabric paint to look like leather, and it soon became Charlie’s favorite chair at their house. When we bought this house, they let us take it, and now it’s his bed in our room. We took the seat cushion out and replaced it with a Pendleton dog bed, and while it doesn’t look quite perfectly like an upholstered Pendleton chair, it is a great budget version that I don’t mind Charlie sleeping in every night ;)

I absolutely love mixing patterns and textures. As long as the color palette is consistent, I honestly have yet to find my “limit” with patterns :) We definitely want to hang some photos on the walls, and I have my eye on another one of my friend Rhiannon’s paintings to go on my side of the bed, so I’ll be sure to share an update when the walls are more decorated! Also, for those curious about logistics, we have a master bathroom (photos near the bottom of this post) and master closet off this room. The window opens to our backyard, and one day I would love to extend our deck and turn the window into french doors so we can go straight outside, but we’ll see!

Travel Inspired Guest Bedroom

For some reason, having a guest room is one of the things that makes me feel super “grown up” (along with occupying the master bedroom haha), and it was a huge priority for me when shopping for houses. I absolutely love hosting people, especially now that our home is in such an amazing place! Most of our guest room set-up is stuff we had in our first apartments for our own bedroom, so the style is still really consistent with those days (thankfully I still dig it!). My biggest goal with this room is for it to be comfortable, homey, and feel special. I also really like the idea of it inspiring our guests! Moab is a major travel destination, so my vision for this room was to inspire adventure and get our guests psyched for their time here. It’s not a room I assume they’ll spend much time in, but more of a “base camp” for their time adventuring in the desert.

The wall across from the bed has two giant Moab area maps that we still reference frequently when planning adventures. There is also an Indian Creek Climbing Area map with specific walls, various maps from nearby National Parks and Monuments, and then the bedside table drawer has other random maps like Yosemite, Alaska, and so on. The little cart has guest linens, some rock climbing magazines, a stack of photos of us doing various rad Moab adventures, and a few little luxuries like hand cream (the desert dries out skin like none other!), snacks, and extra toothbrushes. The closet has extra sheets, blankets, and a few robes people can use for getting to and from the hot tub. The guest bathroom is in the hallway — it’s the “common area” bathroom but is situated close enough that guests can easily get in and out from the room.

GUEST ROOM LINKS

Work-From-Home Office and Indoor Crack Climbing Wall

When we first got the house, this room kinda became the “extra” room and then turned into the video game room because we don’t have a TV in the living room. Last Fall, I finally got inspired to create an office when our renter moved out and I originally set it up in her old room. But then at some point, we realized it made more sense for this front room to be the office and that bedroom to be the game room. I love this room as an office because the ceiling is high, the window faces out front, and I can easily see/say hi to anyone who comes in! It’s also a little bigger and we often have other friends over to work in here too — we’ve fit up to five people in here all getting work done!

A lot of the photos and such on the walls are from my past room(s) as far back as high school, but the furniture is all new to this house. I love having a big desk, a big comfy chair, and the little bookshelf is perfect for storing random things! I ended up collecting some framed prints of my grandparents, my parents from years ago, and Polaroid my brother sent me of my other grandparents! Each photo makes me really happy and inspires my own photography because they’re so genuine and un-posed.

Soon after social distancing became a thing, Callen and our vanlife roomie Jason built a crack wall in this room and I LOVE it! The ceiling is high in here, so the cracks are about 10 feet. We have a number 4, .5, 1, 2, and 5. I really love the 1 and the 2, but going inverted on the 5 is also a fun (and exhausting) ab work out! Having the cracks and the hang board right next to my desk is a really good way to stay motivated and get small workouts in throughout the day. When I start feeling jittery working, I can easily spend 5-10 minutes wearing myself out which helps me focus a lot!

Hallway + Bathroom

This is nothing majorly exciting, although after living on the road, having a flushing toilet I can walk to in the middle of the night without having to put on shoes is pretty amazing ;) We have a lot of towels because of the hot tub, and we somehow still never have enough for all the dirtbags around the house. I didn’t get any photos of the guest/common bathroom, it’s nothing special! The hallway photo is a little preview for the living room tour in part two :)

Yay! I hope you enjoyed part one! I’ll try to do part two as soon as possible (finding all those links takes longer than you’d think!!) with the living room, kitchen, and backyard.
