The Hearnes Home Tour Part Two: Living Room + Kitchen

Hi friends! I finally finished up part two of our home tour: the living room and kitchen! In case you missed it, part one can be found here (our bedrooms and my office). Part three will be our back yard and front yard, but that won’t be ready until we finish the front yard (soooo close!). As a reminder, we bought this house in Moab in early 2019 (and HIGHLY reccomend our realtor Lynda Diem if you’re looking!) and have been slowly making it into our dream little slice of desert. I wasn’t great about taking “before” photos, but have included some from the week we moved in to give you an idea! I’ve tried to link everything, but let me know in the comments if I missed anything!

The wall color, Benjamin Moore Essex Green, is one of my favorite parts of this room! When we moved in, the walls were olive green (kinda a weird green I didn’t love), mustard yellow, and red 🤢 It was hideous haha! But we fell in love with the high ceilings and knew that a white coat of paint over everything would brighten the room up so much! When it was time to pick paint colors, I considered keeping the green wall because I didn’t hate it, but our painter mentioned he’d have to do a new coat anyway, so I decided to pick a darker green! When I chose this color, everyone told me it’d be too dark, but I trusted the white walls and lots of natural light and I’m SO glad I did, it looks amazing! And it never looks too dark to me, even at night. If you read part one, you’ll remember I actually loved it so much I chose to do it on all the walls in our master bedroom too!

One of my biggest goals with our living room was for it to be cozy and aesthetic, but also be able to handle lots of traffic and dogs without getting ruined. I chose a leather couch because of how easy it is to wipe off fur and spills, and I love the distressed look so I’m not worried about scratches! We looked all over for a couch and ended up finding this one at our local furniture store, we LOVE it! I did find a similar one on Amazon if you’re looking for a similar vibe.

My other favorite thing about our living room is our giant Fitz Roy range watercolor print from by friend Rhiannon Klee! She painted the original while she was out there camping and climbing, and when I saw it I knew we had to order a custom giant print! I LOVE it! We also printed a few of our favorite photos from our own adventures (the landscape photos can all be found in our print shop!) and I made sure to fill the room with some of our favorite guide books, adventure memoirs, and coffee table books. The random bits of decor are collected or given to us (like the beautiful coral pieces that were a gift from my grandmother), and all of the cacti are faux from Amazon or Target. I obviously also have a lot of Pendleton blankets (all linked below!) to add a touch of cozy-ness to the room! Our giant rug is from World Market and sadly sold out, but I linked a similar one on Amazon below!

Bright + Airy Kitchen

Our kitchen is probably the biggest improvement in the house — when we moved in it was so dark and full of heavy-looking cabinets. The walls were red and yellow, and the ceiling was yellow, YUCK! Within a few days of moving in, we took down the big wood cabinets from the wall that now has open shelves, as well as a set of cabinets over the fridge. I love how the open shelving made the space look a light brighter and lighter, and it’s a beautiful way to display our dishes! People have asked about dust, but it’s not much of a problem since we use and wash all the dishes every few days. The white walls and ceiling also made a HUGE difference! Eventually, I’d love to replace the floor with the same flooring in the living room (it’s actually faux wood! everyone thinks it’s real wood, but it’s so much more durable and looks beautiful), paint the cabinets a darker color, and possibly replace the counter tops with butcher block style tops, although I really don’t mind the black counters! Our kitchen came with new, nice appliances which was a huge relief for us.

One of my favorite details in our kitchen is the mug rack over our coffee corner — we’ve been gifted some pretty incredible mugs and they’re way too beautiful to hide in a shelf! I also love our friend wall, where we take a Polaroid photos of every visitor. It’s so fun looking back, and some of those photos have become some of my most cherished little items. We also have a signed poster of our most favorite professional climber, Jordan :) I put it up on the wall when we first moved in as a joke, but it’s stayed up and we love it!

My all-time favorite thing about our kitchen, and arguably what sold me on the house, is our view from the kitchen sink! We have two southeast facing corner windows that look directly at the La Sal Mountains. It’s absolutely beautiful, every day at sunset the mountains light up pink! We are lucky to be perched up on a hill, so we can see them super easily above town. The highlight of every evening at home is watching the sunset form those windows!

Yay, I hope you enjoyed this!! Let me know if I missed anything. As a reminder, part one showed our bedrooms and my office (+ mini home climbing gym), and part three will be the front + back yards! Some of the above links are affiliates, but all opinions are my own, and I wouldn’t reccomend anything I don’t love having myself! Let me know if I missed anything ❤️
