When I started doing family photo sessions, I knew I didn’t want to offer the conventional, well-posed, perfectly shot studio-like photo style. There are plenty of places for that, from JC Penny to a local photographer’s seasonal mini sessions. There’s nothing wrong with these, and I’ll always encourage people to seek family photos however feels right to them. But I knew that if I dipped my toes into this world, I’d want to bring the same energy I bring to elopements. I’d want to make my families comfortable immediately, disarm them, and show them that their connection to each other and the land is what creates beautiful, lasting photos.
With the W family, we met up in the middle of a road trip from their home in Arizona and essentially gave their girls space to rule the land for the evening while their parents followed along, stepping in when needed to keep them safe, and I joined the fun as their friend and photographer, capturing what I could in an attempt to tell the story of their magic. To watch children be free as birds, beginning in some nice clothes and beautiful heirloom boots, then barefoot and wild, then finally fully themselves with no clothes on at all as they caught tadpoles in the creek and built a dam with rocks far bigger than their heads…it was a gift I’ll not soon forget. I am lucky to have witnessed these moment and captured these photos. It’s moments like this where I get to see my job brings me into another world, and then makes me return to earth a better woman, more present mother, and more observant person. I hope these images can do a percentage of the same for you as a viewer.
